This piece references a 1960s James Bond movie still. Madison was thinking about classic depictions of coolness, masculinity, the idea of a man’s man, and the boyhood fantasies this movie franchise has perpetuated throughout the last 60 years.
Additionally, she was using this painting as a chance to do a color study, to convey a particular mood through the fading twilight palette. The colors give the piece a sense as though the sun is setting, creating an air of contemplation while signifying a change in society’s ideas related to masculinity.
