The reference photo for this piece is from a 1960s photo shoot at the Playboy mansion. "For this painting," Madison ponders, "I wanted to use elements of ubiquitous midcentury iconography, but in an abstracted sort of way; the glowing, ascending blobs reference a lava lamp and the bold lines that break up the composition are a nod to supergraphics, a design element that was taking over interior design at the time. One of the main themes underlying the piece is ‘predator and prey’ and the power struggle that underlies the back and forth of attraction and seduction."
